For some reason, these seem to be on the DL, so oftentimes you have to guess what they *might* mean. But they don\u2019t need to be on the QT\u2026so here\u2019s is your starter list for talking to those already in the Foster Care world, or when joining online support groups, reading blog posts, etc.<\/p>\n<p>ACV \u2014 Alleged Child Victim (identifier in some states surrounding Indiana for a child who is the alleged victim of abuse or neglect)<\/p>\n<p>AD \u2013 Adopted Daughter (this can also have a number behind it to denote her age)<\/p>\n<p>ADD \u2013 Attention Deficit Disorder<\/p>\n<p>ADHD \u2013 Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder<\/p>\n<p>A\/N \u2014 Abuse and\/or Neglect<\/p>\n<p>AP \u2014 Alleged Perpetrator (identifier in some states surrounding Indiana for a person [minor or adult] who is alleged to have abused or neglected a minor child)<\/p>\n<p>AS \u2013 Adopted Son\u00a0(this can also have a number behind it to denote his age)<\/p>\n<p>BD \u2013 Birth Dad or Biological Dad<\/p>\n<p>BF \u2013 Birth Family or Biological Family<\/p>\n<p>BM \u2013 Birth Mother or Biological Mom<\/p>\n<p>CASA \u2013 Court Appointed Special Advocate\u00a0(a person appointed by the court to advocate for abused or neglected children; this is a volunteer role)<\/p>\n<p>CFT \u2014 Child and Family Team (made up of DCS Family Case Managers, family members, and any other professionals and providers involved in the family case.\u00a0 In some cases, the foster family and pre-adoptive family is included on this team.)<\/p>\n<p>CFTM \u2014 Child and Family Team Meeting (a meeting of DCS, the family, and any professionals providing services to the family, generally to review the progress of the case and consider recommendations.)<\/p>\n<p>CW \u2013 Case Worker<\/p>\n<p>DCS \u2014 Department of Child Services (a state agency that is in charge of social programs, including those for children in foster care) This is the name in Indiana. If you know foster parents in another state, they might use one of these other names and acronyms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CPS \u2013 Child Protective Services<\/li>\n<li>DCF \u2014 Department of Children and Families<\/li>\n<li>DCFS \u2014 Department of Children and Family Services<\/li>\n<li>DSS \u2014 Department of Social Services<\/li>\n<li>DHS \u2014 Department of Human Services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>DV \u2014 Domestic Violence<\/p>\n<p>ED \u2013 Emotionally Disturbed (a term defined in United States Federal Law used for children with such severe emotional problems that adversely affects their ability to learn in an educational setting)<\/p>\n<p>EPSDT \u2014 Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnotic and Treatment (the type of comprehensive physical health examination required by Medicaid for children in foster care)<\/p>\n<p>FAS \u2013 Fetal Alcohol Syndrome<\/p>\n<p>FASD \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foster2forever.com\/2012\/03\/fetal-alcohol-spectrum-disorder.html\">Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder<\/a>\u00a0(the physical, neurological and mental birth defects caused by a woman\u2019s consumption of alcohol during pregnancy)<\/p>\n<p>FCM \u2014 Family Case Manager<\/p>\n<p>FC \u2014 Foster Care<\/p>\n<p>FD \u2013 Foster Daughter\u00a0(this can also have a number behind it to denote her age)<\/p>\n<p>FH \u2014 Foster Home<\/p>\n<p>FMLA \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foster2forever.com\/2012\/04\/fmla.html\">Family Medical Leave Act<\/a>\u00a0(United States Federal Law requiring larger employers to provide employees unpaid leave for serious health conditions, to care for a sick family member, or to care for a newborn or adopted or foster child)<\/p>\n<p>FS \u2013 Foster Son\u00a0(this can also have a number behind it to denote his age)<\/p>\n<p>FTT \u2013 Failure to Thrive\u00a0(underdevelopment and lack of growth in a child; symptoms can include height, weight, and head circumference below standard growth charts)<\/p>\n<p>GAL \u2013 Guardian Ad Litem\u00a0(a person appointed by the court to represent the \u201cbest interest of the child\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>GH \u2014 Group Home<\/p>\n<p>HIPAA \u2013 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act\u00a0(United States Federal Law that make it easier for people to keep health insurance, protect the confidentiality and security of healthcare information)<\/p>\n<p>ICAMA \u2013 Interstate Compact on Adoption and Medical Assistance\u00a0(an agreement between states that ensures\u00a0continued provision of all of the benefits of an adoption subsidy agreement, including Medicaid services, regardless of the state of residence of the child)<\/p>\n<p>ICPC \u2013 Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children\u00a0(a statutory agreement between all 50 states that governs the placement of children from one state into another state; it sets forth the requirements that must be met before a child can be placed out of state)<\/p>\n<p>ICWA \u2013 Indian Child Welfare Act\u00a0(United States Federal Law that regulates custody and placement of Native American children not only in foster care, but also in adoption proceedings; the law gives preference to a child\u2019s extended family or to a member of the child\u2019s tribe over a non-Native American adoptive parent)<\/p>\n<p>IDEA \u2013 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (United States Federal Law that requires schools to provide students with a disability an education that is tailored to their individual special needs)<\/p>\n<p>IEP \u2013 Individualized Educational Plan\u00a0(an individualized document that is required for a child who receives special education services and is designed to address each child\u2019s unique learning issues and include specific educational goals)<\/p>\n<p>ODD \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foster2forever.com\/2013\/03\/oppositional-defiant-disorder.html\">Oppositional Defiant Disorder<\/a>\u00a0(a disorder in a child marked by defiant and disobedient behavior to authority figures)<\/p>\n<p>OHI \u2013 Other Health Impairment\u00a0(a chronic condition that causes struggles in the classroom, such as ADD, ADHD, epilepsy, Tourette syndrome)<\/p>\n<p>OT \u2014 Occupational Therapy<\/p>\n<p>PT \u2014 Physical Therapy<\/p>\n<p>RAD \u2013 Reactive Attachment Disorder\u00a0(a condition found in children who may have received grossly negligent care and do not form a healthy emotional\u00a0attachment\u00a0with their primary caregivers \u2014 usually their mothers \u2014 before age 5)<\/p>\n<p>RT \u2013 Residential Treatment\u00a0(a live-in facility that provides mental health and behavioral treatment)<\/p>\n<p>SAO \u2014 Sexual Acting Out (when a child engages is abnormal behavior that is a response to being exposed to sexual acts or has been sexually abused)<\/p>\n<p>SLP \u2013 Speech Language Pathologist<\/p>\n<p>ST \u2014 Speech Therapy<\/p>\n<p>SW \u2013 Social Worker<\/p>\n<p>TBRI \u2014 Trust Based Relational Intervention (an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. It\u00a0uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors.)<\/p>\n<p>TFC \u2014 Therapeutic Foster Care<\/p>\n<p>TPR \u2013 Termination of Parental Rights\u00a0(an involuntary legal removal of a parent\u2019s rights to their children through the judicial system)<\/p>\n<p>WIC \u2013 Women, Infants and Children\u00a0(Federal program that provides vouchers for food and formula for infants and children under 5 years old; foster children are automatically eligible)<\/p>\n<p>310 \u2014 In Indiana, the numeric reference for an allegation of A\/N (abuse or neglect)<\/p>\n<p>311 \u2014 In Indiana, the numeric reference for the final report of an assessment of alleged abuse or neglect with findings of \u201csubstantiated\u201d or \u201cunsubstantiated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is by no means an exhaustive list but it\u2019s a decent start, as you begin (or consider beginning) your journey into Foster Care.
