Today, I want to talk about\u00a0ongoing\u00a0trainings\/continuing education for foster parents because it\u00a0is required for foster parents. You can\u2019t keep your foster license if you aren\u2019t continually learning new things about how to care for children in your care.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To back up a step,\u00a0for those who are new to this process, as\u00a0part of your license,\u00a0specifically\u00a0if you are\u00a0licensed\u00a0through Children\u2019<\/span>s\u00a0Bureau<\/span>,\u00a0your license is therapeutic\u00a0and\u00a0you will need 20 hours of training\u00a0per year to maintain\u00a0it. To be clear, this is 20 hours EACH if there are two of you in the home who are licensed.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over half of these hours\u00a0(at least 12)\u00a0need to be done through in-person training. Trainings\u00a0hosted by Children\u2019s Bureau (which\u00a0is amazing at offering multiple training options throughout the year for you) as well as other trainings you\u2019ll learn to find out about as you go along on your journey. The\u00a0rest of the needed\u00a0hours can be done\u00a0by\u00a0reading a book or watching a movie with foster care themes and then filling out a form to demonstrate your take-away. What\u2019s nice about smaller trainings is that you have the opportunity to meet other foster parents\u00a0and\u00a0make personal connections\u00a0that\u00a0eventually\u00a0might\u00a0lead into an organic type of support system for you. Additionally, it might help you make connections for a respite care provider should you ever be in need of that. Any home licensed by CB would be great at providing respite for your child;\u00a0but\u00a0understandably\u00a0it\u2019s really\u00a0nice to know the foster parents in advance and have something of a relationship with them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The other nice things about a smaller, single-topic training\u00a0is\u00a0that you might have the opportunity to\u00a0\u201cdig in\u201d\u00a0to that a little bit more than you might otherwise. You might come away feeling better equipped or knowledgeable on a subject or situation you\u2019re facing in your own home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, there is\u00a0something\u00a0to be said for all you can glean from<\/span>\u00a0a conference.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now\u00a0I\u2019ll be honest\u2026I do\u00a0love\u00a0a good\u00a0conference. There\u2019s something invigorating about being with a bunch of other people who are passionate about the same things you are and\u00a0who\u00a0are there to learn. Granted,\u00a0I am well-aware that\u00a0many of them are just there because it\u2019s a requirement of their foster care license, but sometimes you\u00a0can stumble upon\u00a0a fellow nerd, such as myself,\u00a0who\u00a0enjoys\u00a0the learning, simply for the learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I encourage people to go to conferences with a spouse or significant other who is also licensed\u2026or honestly\u00a0any other foster parents. Camaraderie is great but comparing notes from the same session is most insightful.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, it\u2019s fun to chat with those who attended other sessions\u00a0and hear\u00a0what they learned. For instance, I attended\u00a0a conference\u00a0in the spring with a couple of friends and one of them\u00a0went to a session on\u00a0something called\u00a0\u201cCompassion Fatigue\u201d\u00a0(also called Blocked Care). I had no idea what it so\u00a0I\u00a0did not think It would be relevant to me. However, after hearing her talk about it after the session, I wished\u00a0I\u00a0HAD\u00a0attended; but fortunately, I was able to take some time and look it up\u00a0on my own.\u00a0BTW, since it was\u00a0something\u00a0I had\u00a0not heard of, but\u00a0have quickly figured out that it\u2019s important for foster parents to know, I\u2019m actually going to share information\u00a0about it\u00a0with all of you\u00a0in an upcoming post.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My\u00a0point in all this is to continue your journey outside of a silo. You can\u2019t be a foster parent on your own, you need support, and along with that support comes down opportunity to learn\u2026not just about yourself but about the children\u00a0in\u00a0your care and how you can best serve them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So,\u00a0here\u2019s my soap-box moment on this: even if it wasn\u2019t required, we all should still be learning and growing and striving\u00a0to give\u00a0the absolute best for these kids\u00a0from hard places. They all deserve someone to champion them, and if they don\u2019t get that in their biological\u00a0families, then they\u00a0should get it in yours\u2026and the best way to do that is always be learning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
