This is the last blog in this series (which was supposed to be small but ended up being about 6 more posts than I\u00a0anticipated) \u2026because there are just so many things about which I want you to be aware. I want your eyes as open as they can be. And even though you\u2019ll never be fully prepared for this journey, I want you to at least be able to say,\u00a0\u201cOh yes\u2026this caught me off guard, but then I remembered Kris talking about that in her blog.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, my final bit of advice\/info is this: you\u2019ll never be fully prepared for a new placement, no matter how hard you try. And to some degree, I think this foster parent encapsulates it best with her comment: \u201c<\/span>Be ready to shop for socks and underwear for every placement!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, you can obviously have,\u00a0on hand,\u00a0a stash of socks and underwear in every possible size and gender combination\u2026but honestly how realistic is that? I think her point (besides the obvious) is that\u00a0there will\u00a0always\u00a0be\u00a0something you need\u2026and it might be big, it might be small. Or it might be both.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The children\u00a0often arrive\u00a0with little to nothing (as we\u2019ve discussed previously) so it\u2019s going to be the job of the foster family to amass what is needed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly, some things will already be on hand. For instance, if you know you\u2019re planning on taking kids 0\u20134\u00a0years old, you can probably guess what equipment (think stroller, car seat,\u00a0etc.)\u00a0bedding, and toys you might need. But things such as bottles, cups, diapers, clothing, formula,\u00a0etc.\u2026.it would not be practical to have every single kind on hand. A couple bottles or cups? Sure\u2026but it might not be the kind the child is used to and he refuses it\u2026so you\u2019ll have to buy more. A handful of diapers of each size?\u00a0Sure,\u00a0but you\u2019ll still have to get more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, our son was just over 3 months but was in newborn clothing and diapers when he first came. And the super-chill 8mo placed with us wore\u00a018\u201324-month\u00a0clothing. Point being: you just never know and you can\u2019t always assume what size you\u2019ll need based on age.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My point in all this is that you can be prepared, but part of that preparation might be in the form of a list of things you know you\u2019ll need to acquire once the child is in your home\u2026because you don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know. And you won\u2019t know until you\u2019re in it. And that is ok!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
