{"id":13007,"date":"2022-09-22T19:00:14","date_gmt":"2022-09-22T23:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fireflyin.org\/?p=13007"},"modified":"2025-02-25T12:05:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-25T17:05:14","slug":"kris-corner-meeting-sensory-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fireflyin.org\/cnh\/resources\/news-library\/kris-corner-meeting-sensory-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"Kris&#8217; Corner &#8211; Meeting Sensory Needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As you may (or may not if this world of foster care is new to you): many children from hard places have sensory needs above\u2026and possibly beyond\u2026those of the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I have to admit\u2026once I began looking into my child\u2019s sensory needs, I realized that I had some of my own sensory needs, which I had never before acknowledged. And to be fair: it wasn\u2019t that I was trying to hide or deny them\u2026I had no idea it was a thing! I have a zero as my ACES score, so I know that\u2019s not it, but sometimes people simply have sensory issues due to anxiety, depression, etc. But I will say this: I have never slept as well as I have since I began using a weighted blanket every.single.night!<\/p>\n<p>But this post is about kids with trauma, and not about me. So here\u2019s the thing\u2026there are seven different types of sensory needs a child may have when they come into your home. Who even knew that? I definitely did not when I began my foster care journey\u2026and honestly it is still sometimes difficult to always keep in mind when my child is struggling.<\/p>\n<p>So in an effort to help you (and me), here are the seven sensory needs to be on the lookout for:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Proprioceptive<\/li>\n<li>Vestibular<\/li>\n<li>Visual<\/li>\n<li>Olfactory<\/li>\n<li>Tactile<\/li>\n<li>Auditory<\/li>\n<li>Oral<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So now that I&#8217;ve listed them, I need to do some explaining for you: how can each of these needs present themselves and how can we help our kids who are struggling with these needs? (To be totally clear\u2026this is not an all-encompassing list of presentations or solutions; it\u2019s just something to get everyone considering what *may* be going on with a child.)<\/p>\n<p>Proprioceptive Needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Balance issues (trouble standing on one foot or frequent falls while walking or sitting)<\/li>\n<li>Uncoordinated movement (not being able to walk in a straight line)<\/li>\n<li>Clumsiness (dropping or bumping into things)<\/li>\n<li>Poor posture control (slouching or having to place extra weight on a table for balance while sitting)<\/li>\n<li>Trouble recognizing your own strength (pressing on a pen too hard when writing or not being able to gauge the force needed to pick something up)<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding certain movements or activities (climbing stairs or walking on uneven surfaces because of a fear of falling<\/li>\n<li>Loves a tight hug or firm touch<\/li>\n<li>Grasps objects too tightly<\/li>\n<li>Craves deep pressure and vibration<\/li>\n<li>May appear clumsy<\/li>\n<li>Fears uneven surfaces or stairs\/escalators<\/li>\n<li>Prefers jumping or skipping to just walking<\/li>\n<li>Has floppy\/low muscle tone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Proprioceptive Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=pressure%20vest\/\">pressure<\/a>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=weighted+clothing\/\">weighted vest<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=weighted+lap+pad\/\">lap pad<\/a>, or tool<\/li>\n<li>Provide a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/therapy-balls.html\/\">ball<\/a>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/product-type\/cushions.html\/\">wiggle cushion<\/a>\u00a0for seating<\/li>\n<li>Use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=grips\/\">grips<\/a>for writing<\/li>\n<li>Practice walking over pillows and soft uneven surfaces<\/li>\n<li>Chewing gum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vestibular Needs:<\/p>\n<p><u>Hyperresponsive Behaviors<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gets car sick\/motion sickness<\/li>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t like movement (swings, slides, roller coasters)<\/li>\n<li>Avoids having head be upside down\/tipped backwards (hair washing or getting diaper changed)<\/li>\n<li>Appear to be clumsy or unsteady<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Hyporesponsive Behaviors<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always spinning, running, moving, or fidgeting<\/li>\n<li>Can spin and spin and spin and doesn\u2019t get dizzy<\/li>\n<li>Engages in risky behavior<\/li>\n<li>May be impulsive<\/li>\n<li>Has floppy or low muscle tone<\/li>\n<li>Craves movement that is fast or intense<\/li>\n<li>Enjoys being upside down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vestibular Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/whisper-tilt-n-spin.html\/\">spin disc<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Suspend a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/product-type\/swings.html\/\">swing<\/a>that can be used regularly<\/li>\n<li>Have a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=trampolines\/\">trampoline<\/a>nearby<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visual Needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seeks out bright or busy environments<\/li>\n<li>Prefer toys with bright, reflective, or shiny surfaces<\/li>\n<li>Distracted by objects with spinning, flashing, or moving lights<\/li>\n<li>Insists on clothing and toys with specific shapes, colors, and patterns<\/li>\n<li>Craves screen time and prefers stimulating movies and games<\/li>\n<li>Avoids bright lights<\/li>\n<li>Shifts gaze to avoid eye contact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Visual Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear sunglasses, even indoors<\/li>\n<li>Use a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=mirror\/\">mirror<\/a>or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=weighted+animal\/\">weighted animal companion<\/a>\u00a0to practice eye contact<\/li>\n<li>Make sure wall decorations are soothing and not over stimulating<\/li>\n<li>Play with flashlights and other visually stimulating toys<\/li>\n<li>Encourage a healthy amount of screen time<\/li>\n<li>Sleep with a nightlight or calming alternative, such as a lava lamp<\/li>\n<li>Provide a variety of colors and patterns in toys, d\u00e9cor, and clothing<\/li>\n<li>Use visual aids while studying to help reinforce key concepts<\/li>\n<li>Schedule time throughout the day to watch videos or play with stimulating toys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Olfactory Needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Super sensitive (either over- or under-responsive) to various smells<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Over-responsive<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong reactions to smells that may be unnoticed by peers (such as refusal to try certain foods or be in the same room as others eating them)<\/li>\n<li>Avoids certain scented materials or objects that contain cologne, perfume, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Under-responsive<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does not seem to notice unpleasant odors or drastic changes in smells within their environment<\/li>\n<li>Strong need to smell objects (such as soaps, markers, clothing, gasoline, other strong odors)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Olfactory Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use more natural deodorizers like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=aromatherapy\/\">essential oils<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Use an electric air deodorizer for the room<\/li>\n<li>Acknowledge the hypersensitivities and identify an appropriate response with them (such as leaving the room temporarily, moving away, reminding that the smell will not harm them)<\/li>\n<li>Practice desensitization to smells in small gradual increments<\/li>\n<li>Discuss scents throughout the day<\/li>\n<li>Put labels on different items and discuss emotions or any memories tied to them (such as baking, laundry, flowers, crafts)<\/li>\n<li>Create and play games with your child or discover activities that incorporate items that contain scents (such as cotton balls with essential oils, scented candles, scratch and sniff snickers, scented crayons or markers, food\/drink, playdoh, and lotions)<\/li>\n<li>Note that different smells can be calming (lavender) and some can also be alerting (peppermint)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tactile Needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoids clothing in general, especially that with tags<\/li>\n<li>Touches things that are smooth or soothing<\/li>\n<li>Touch everything (such as brushing along walls while walking, picking up everything)<\/li>\n<li>Avoids being barefoot or walking on grass, sand, carpet<\/li>\n<li>Avoids seams and wears socks inside out<\/li>\n<li>Cleans hands a lot<\/li>\n<li>Does not like showers or getting wet<\/li>\n<li>Does not like being touched; avoids hugs and physical contact with others<\/li>\n<li>Avoids certain textures or textured material<\/li>\n<li>Avoids messy hands, face, or just mess in general<\/li>\n<li>Unaware of pain or if hands or face are messy<\/li>\n<li>Craves being close to people or need to be touching something constantly<\/li>\n<li>Unaware of dangerous items that may cause pain or injury<\/li>\n<li>May be unaware if something hurts (high pain threshold)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tactile Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buy seamless or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=shirts\/\">tagless clothing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Provide soft\u00a0pellets or cooking flour for play<\/li>\n<li>Encourage<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/product-type\/putties.html\/\">putty play<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/diagnosis\/fine-motor-delay.html\/\">fine motor games<\/a>\u00a0and use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=manipulatives\/\">manipulatives<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Suggest chores that use water such as washing dishes<\/li>\n<li>Play outside often and run in grass, walk on sand, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Auditory Needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easily startled by fireworks, loud noises or crashing sounds<\/li>\n<li>Turns volume up on music or TV<\/li>\n<li>Always tapping feet or hands, or likes drumming<\/li>\n<li>Overreacts to sounds<\/li>\n<li>Avoid noisy places or activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Auditory Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide noise-cancelling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=EAR+MUFFS\/\">earmuffs<\/a>\/headphones<\/li>\n<li>Encourage drum or percussion lessons<\/li>\n<li>Give extra time\u00a0between instructions and also more time before you repeat instructions to avoid auditory overload<\/li>\n<li>Completing<a href=\"https:\/\/www.griffinot.com\/the-mystery-of-heavy-work\/\">heavy work\u00a0<\/a>activities with the child prior to going into noisy environments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Oral Needs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bites others<\/li>\n<li>Chews on sleeves, non-food objects, fingers, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Picky eater<\/li>\n<li>Craves spicy, salty, or sour flavors<\/li>\n<li>Does not like textured food<\/li>\n<li>Does not like brushing teeth or having teeth cleaned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Oral Solutions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide crunchy snacks such as apples, carrots or celery<\/li>\n<li>Provide a favorite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/product-type\/chewies.html\/\">chewy<\/a>to have on hand<\/li>\n<li>Provide chewing gum<\/li>\n<li>Encourage use of electric toothbrush or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/funandfunction.com\/catalogsearch\/result\/?q=oral+vibration\/\">oral vibration device<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I mentioned above, this is in no way an all-inclusive list.
